Columbus, Ohio -- The
Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has announced its
All-Conference selections for the 2005 season. By a vote of the conference
coaches, Loyola's Scott Green (OH, Sr., Athol Springs, N.Y.) has been named the
MIVA Player of the Year and Rambler coach Shane Davis has been
honored as the MIVA Coach of the Year. Ohio State's Daniel Mathews (S, Fr.,
Shorewood, Wis.) was named the MIVA Freshman of the Year.
Green hit .311 in league play ranking 16th, averaged
4.88 points (4th), 4.12 kills (5th), 2.12 digs (8th) and averaged .47 aces per
game (2nd) in leading the Ramblers to the MIVA regular season championship.
Davis, in his second year with Loyola (25-2 overall, 15-1, 1st place), guided
the Ramblers to its second league championship in the history of the program.
Mathews averaged 13.20 assists per game in league play to rank second. He
averaged .36 aces (4th), .96 blocks (12) and 1.73 digs (17th) in conference
play.
Pompei wins GOLD!
Andy Pompei was selected as a member of the 2004 United
States Youth National Team that traveled to Mexico City to compete in the Boys'
Youth NORCECA Championship.

The 2004 Boys’ Youth Team beat Canada three
games to zero (25-19, 27-25 and 25-17) in the finals of the
NORCECA Continental Championship in Mexico City. In taking the
NORCECA gold medal, Team USA has for the first time qualified
for a boys’ youth world championship tournament.
Congratulations goes out to the team, which
finished the tournament undefeated, and to Andy on his
remarkable achievement. Well done! |

Spurlock named to Volleyball Magazine "Fab 50" List
Ben Spurlock of Eden VBC 18s was recently named to the 2004 Boys Fab 50 List
published by Volleyball Magazine. Spurlock, of Ohio, who also was named to
the 2004 East Coast Championship All-Tournament Team, will continue his
collegiate career at Ohio State in the fall. Congratulations to Ben and
best of luck at OSU!!!
Eden VBC members shine Gold at Empire State Games!
Carrying on the the tradition of excellence established by Eden VBC members,
the 2004 Empire State Games in Binghamton, New York saw the Western Region Boys
Scholastic Team capture another gold medal! This was Western's 9th
consecutive gold medal, good for second-best on the all time list.
First-year ESG Coach Brian Lombardo (Eden VBC 16), taking over for Coach Tom
Weislo, who coached the team to 6 consecutive gold medals, led an experienced
group of players on their title quest, culminating with a victory over Long
Island in the championship. The following Eden VBC members participated:

Collegiate All-American and Eden VBC Alum Jeff Ptak (Frontier HS, IPFW)
recently signed a contract to play professionally in Italy for the coming
season. After a great stint in the Puerto Rican Premier League, Jeff will
travel to Italy to compete against Europe's best! Well done!!!

Telaak Named MIVA Player of the Week
Tuesday, March 16, 2004 Mercyhurst
libero Dennis Telaak (Fr., 5-9, Hamburg, N.Y./Eden High School)
has been selected as the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball
Association Player of the Week. Telaak helped lead the Lakers to two
home conference wins last week over Quincy. In the 3-0 (30-17, 31-29,
30-28) Friday win, Telaak recorded 12 digs and in the 3-1 (28-30,
30-26, 30-22, 30-25) win Saturday, he produced 17 digs. He twice made
point saving receptions off serves that caught the top of the net and
nearly fell to the floor. For the two matches, he averaged 4.14 digs
per game and had no errors in 47 serve receptions. The two wins are
part of Mercyhurst’s first five game winning streak since 1999. The
Lakers have also won four straight matches in the MIVA, marking the
longest conference winning streak in school history.
Buggs Named NECVA Metro Division Player of the Week
2/10/04 NEW PALTZ, NY -- SUNY New Paltz sophomore setter
Kevin Buggs (Tonawanda, NY, Canisius High School, Buffalo) has been
named the Metro Division Player of the Week in the North Eastern
Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA). Buggs averaged 13.0 assists
per game while leading New Paltz to a 2-1 record a week ago. He
surpassed the 50-assist mark in two matches including a season-best 53
in a 3-1 loss to defending NECVA champion Stevens Tech on February 3.
Buggs had 39 assists in a 3-0 sweep at Polytechnic University on
February 5 and capped off the week with 51 assists, four kills and a
.571 hitting percentage in a 3-1 win over Ramapo on February 7. Buggs
is fifth in the NECVA in assists with 11.89 per game. The SUNY New Paltz
men's volleyball team, winners of three straight matches, is 5-2 overall
and tied for third place in the NECVA with a 3-2 record.
Honsberger Named EIVA Player of the Week
NEWARK, NJ
(January 20, 2004) – Sophomore outside hitter Brian Honsberger
(Lancaster, NY/Lancaster Central HS) has been named the EIVA Division
I-II Player of the Week after an outstanding start to the 2004 season.
Honsberger led Rutgers-Newark to a 3-1 victory in the EIVA Tait opener
over St. Francis, PA. In the match, he scored 23 points, from 17 kills
and 6 blocks. He hit .343 on the night. Before the St. Francis match
with the conference opener, Honsberger was impressive on weekend trip to
the Midwest. In a four-game loss to IPFW, Honsberger score 28 points
on 25 kills, 1 ace, and 2 blocks. Against Ball State, Honsberger
tallied 11 kills and 2 blocks for 13 points in a 0-3 decision. In
dropping a three-game match to Ohio State, Honsberger posted 23 points
with 17 kills and 6 blocks. For the week, Honsberger averaged 6.36
points/game, 5.14 kills/game, and 1.14 blocks/game while hitting .338.

Telaak Named MIVA Player of the Week
Tuesday, March 16, 2004 Mercyhurst
libero Dennis Telaak (Fr., 5-9, Hamburg, N.Y./Eden High School)
has been selected as the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball
Association Player of the Week. Telaak helped lead the Lakers to two
home conference wins last week over Quincy. In the 3-0 (30-17, 31-29,
30-28) Friday win, Telaak recorded 12 digs and in the 3-1 (28-30,
30-26, 30-22, 30-25) win Saturday, he produced 17 digs. He twice made
point saving receptions off serves that caught the top of the net and
nearly fell to the floor. For the two matches, he averaged 4.14 digs
per game and had no errors in 47 serve receptions. The two wins are
part of Mercyhurst’s first five game winning streak since 1999. The
Lakers have also won four straight matches in the MIVA, marking the
longest conference winning streak in school history.
Buggs Named NECVA Metro Division Player of the Week
2/10/04 NEW PALTZ, NY -- SUNY New Paltz sophomore setter
Kevin Buggs (Tonawanda, NY, Canisius High School, Buffalo) has been
named the Metro Division Player of the Week in the North Eastern
Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA). Buggs averaged 13.0 assists
per game while leading New Paltz to a 2-1 record a week ago. He
surpassed the 50-assist mark in two matches including a season-best 53
in a 3-1 loss to defending NECVA champion Stevens Tech on February 3.
Buggs had 39 assists in a 3-0 sweep at Polytechnic University on
February 5 and capped off the week with 51 assists, four kills and a
.571 hitting percentage in a 3-1 win over Ramapo on February 7. Buggs
is fifth in the NECVA in assists with 11.89 per game. The SUNY New Paltz
men's volleyball team, winners of three straight matches, is 5-2 overall
and tied for third place in the NECVA with a 3-2 record.
Honsberger Named EIVA Player of the Week
NEWARK, NJ
(January 20, 2004) – Sophomore outside hitter Brian Honsberger
(Lancaster, NY/Lancaster Central HS) has been named the EIVA Division
I-II Player of the Week after an outstanding start to the 2004 season.
Honsberger led Rutgers-Newark to a 3-1 victory in the EIVA Tait opener
over St. Francis, PA. In the match, he scored 23 points, from 17 kills
and 6 blocks. He hit .343 on the night. Before the St. Francis match
with the conference opener, Honsberger was impressive on weekend trip to
the Midwest. In a four-game loss to IPFW, Honsberger score 28 points
on 25 kills, 1 ace, and 2 blocks. Against Ball State, Honsberger
tallied 11 kills and 2 blocks for 13 points in a 0-3 decision. In
dropping a three-game match to Ohio State, Honsberger posted 23 points
with 17 kills and 6 blocks. For the week, Honsberger averaged 6.36
points/game, 5.14 kills/game, and 1.14 blocks/game while hitting .338.

selected to participate in the USA Volleyball High Performance Camp
in Colorado Springs!
- Eden VBC 16s players Ryan Zettle
(Canisius HS), Keith Capage (West Seneca West), Matt
Anderson (West Seneca West), Chad Proudman (Eden HS) and
Kevin Lasky (West Seneca West) have been selected to
participate in the USA Volleyball Developmental Camp at Kent State
University!
- Eden VBC 15s player Eric Buggs
(Kenmore West HS) has been selected to participate in the USA
Volleyball Developmental Camp at Kent State University!
THE COLLEGE SCENE:
- Eden VBC Alumnus Greg Lardo (Hamburg
HS) led Springfield College to its third consecutive Molten Division
III Men's Volleyball Championship. The Division III All-American
tallied 21 kills in the championship match against Juniata. Junior
Mark Schlabach (Clarence HS), also an Eden VBC alum, helped
contribute to the win.
- Senior Division I All-American outside
hitter and Eden VBC alum Jeff Ptak (Frontier HS) helped lead
IPFW to a #3 seed in the MIVA playoffs. He was named 2003 MIVA
Player of The Year and was invited to play on the 2003 World
University Games Team!
- Also in the MIVA playoffs are alumni Dan
Kick (St. Francis HS) and Jeff Smietana (West Seneca East
HS) of Mercyhurst, the #8 seed. Kick earned the role of starting
setter as a freshman!
- MIVA #2 seed Loyola-Chicago has alum

- In the EIVA, #3 seed Rutgers has two Eden
VBC alums starting and making an impact: freshmen Brian
Honsberger (Lancaster HS) and Henry Richardson
(Lewiston-Porter HS). Honsberger was named EIVA Second-Team All
Star!
- EIVA #9 seed Southampton is led by Eden VBC
Alums Joe Daigler (North Tonawanda HS) and Scott Schult
(Clarence HS).
- Freshman Scott Funke (Eden HS) had a
fine season for Division 1 St. Francis, logging significant playing
time by the end of the season!
- Freshman Kevin Buggs (Canisius HS)
worked his way into the role of starting setter by the end of the
year at SUNY New Paltz!
- Freshman Greg Higgins (Kenmore West
HS), playing for Stevens, was 4th on his team in season kills and
helped lead his team to a 4th place finish at the Molten Division
III Championship!
